Making a Difference Case Study - Phil

Organisation/Group:

Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust (LWT)

Why You Got Involved?

I've had an interest in wildlife and birds in particular all my life. Volunteering for the trust allows me to spend as much time as I wish supporting the organisation across it's environmental, conservation and educational ambitions. One day I can be helping out in the nature centre meeting visitors, another I can be out on the reserve as a ranger or supporting the shorebird warden protecting the nesting ringed plovers and little terns.

What Impact/Difference is it Making to the Community?

LWT manages almost 100 different sites across Lincolnshire including Gibraltar Point where I spend my time. Some 1300 people volunteer, without whom the trust would be unable to carry out it's work which not only supports nature but provides so much pleasure to hundreds of thousands of visitors every year.

How Would You Encourage Other to Get Involved in Their Community?

For me the key to volunteering is to offer your time to a cause which is special and meaningful to you. That way the rewarding feelings of satisfaction and achievement are 10 times greater than the time you are able to give.
