Pitch for funding for F1 in Schools STEM Challenge by Haven High Academy

Last Friday (15 July) we welcomed students from Haven High Academy to experience the Dragon's Den challenging environment in a bid to win funding to participate in the F1 in Schools STEM Challenge under the team's branding of Legacy Racing.

F1 in Schools STEM Challenge is for students 9 to 19 years of age and the main objective is to help change the perceptions of science, technology, engineering and maths by creating a fun and exciting learning environment for young people to develop an informed view about careers in engineering, Formula 1, science, marketing and technology.

F1 in Schools Ltd is a social enterprise working with committed industry partners to provide an exciting yet challenging educational experience through the magnetic appeal of Formula 1. F1 in Schools is the only truly global educational programme that raises awareness of STEM and Formula 1 among students and school children in every region, in every country, on every continent.

The group of students were invited in to pitch for funding to support promotional marketing to our economic growth team panel along with Richard Chambers from Boston College. The pitch included development of a team HQ, branding, CAD technology and equipment.

After Legacy Racing had made their pitch they were asked to adjourn whilst the 'dragons' - Michelle Sacks, Deputy Chief Executive for Growth for the Council, Clive Gibbon, Head of Investment and Growth and Richard Chambers, Head of Projects Boston College - discussed the pitch that was made in front of them before inviting the students back in to find out their outcome.

Michelle Sacks said: "We were overwhelmed with the presentation you gave us, all six of you boys have so much enthusiasm and passion which is extremely inspiring to see." Richard added, "You are just like a pit crew." Clive Gibbon commented: "Their pitch to us dragons was articulate in reason, precise in delivery and passionate in belief. Looking forward to watching Legacy Racing's progression."

The group were offered £1,000 funding, support at future sponsor events to bring in local business support and half day with Boston Borough Council looking at different ways of communication and engagement.
