Housing and homelessness information and advice for young people

Housing advice

Young people wishing to join the housing register for affordable/social housing should generally be 18 years of age or over.

Exceptions will be made where a young person between the ages of 16 and 18 years is expecting a baby or where a 16/17 year old becomes homeless and following assessment between housing and Children's Services, supported housing is recommended.

Unfortunately there is very limited availability of such single person's accommodation available for letting so there may be a long wait.

It may be possible to consider renting in the private sector.  This may not always be an option due high rents in the area and the restrictions for single people under the age of 35 under the Government's Local Housing Allowance.

Homelessness

Preventing any threatened homelessness will always be the first option.  The housing needs team will work with you and advise you on your options.

There is a film on youth homelessness called 'Choices'. The film guides young people to help and support if they do become homeless but importantly it encourages young people to seek help at an earlier stage to prevent them becoming homeless.
