Home Composting

Composting is an inexpensive, natural process that transforms your kitchen and garden waste into a valuable and nutrient rich food for your garden. It's easy to make and use. Compost improves your soil's condition and your plants and flowers will love it!

You can buy a discounted compost bin through the Get Composting website or phone 0844 571 4444. The items are delivered direct to your door, there is a delivery charge, so if you need more than one item you are better to order them together. This company also offer discounted water butts.

Composting needs a number of different items to get the mix right. Aim for a balance of 50% greens and 50% browns in your compost bin.

Greens are quick to rot and provide important nitrogen and moisture, such as: fruit and vegetable peelings and pulp, grass mowings, pet bedding, egg shells, plants, weeds and prunings.

Browns are slower to rot, provide carbon & fibre and allow air pockets to form, such as: paper and cardboard, autumn leaves, straw, kitchen roll, vacuum cleaner contents, hair, thorny prunings.

Items to keep out are bread, cat litter, nappies, dairy products, meat or fish or plastic bags.
